The last recipe of “Yukitchen Halloween Spectacular” series is inspired by Soot Sprites from Spirited Away! We Japanese call Soot Sprites “Makkuro Kurosuke” (some call them Susuwatari but it’s not as familiar), so I was going to call this recipe “Pumpkin Smoothie with Makkuro Kurosuke!”. But I found out that no one can pronounce it right if they are not Japanese. Thanks to my Instagram followers who helped me find out Makkuro Kurosuke was actually called “Soot Sprites” in English! I didn’t know that.
But it was quite cute to see my friends struggling to pronounce “Makkuro Kurosuke”, though. It basically means “Mr. blackie black” or something in Japanese, and I think it’s a brilliant name that Hayao Miyazaki picked up!
These adorable Soot Sprites are made of Shiratama(kind of Mochi) and mixed with cocoa powder. I absolutely love crafting, so it was so much fun making them! By the way, this recipe is not only cute, guys. This smoothie is actually vegan, meaning, I’m not using any dairy products. So it’s cute AND healthy for you!
The most important thing about making the best vegan smoothie is to know what substitute you should use. It was such an eye-opening experience when I first watched “The Engine 2 Diet” 3 years ago. It was showing how frozen bananas can taste like ice cream if you blended well in a blender.
I was all “no way”, so I tried it right after I watch the film. And boy, it WAS right. It really did taste like ice cream, without using any dairy products! That was the biggest discovery of the year!
- ・2 cups soy milk
- ・1/2 cup rolled oats
- ・2 tbsp chia seeds
- ・1 cup boiled pumpkin
- ・1 frozen ripe banana
- ・2 tsp cinnamon
- ・1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- ・1.5-2 tbsp maple syrup
- ・70g Glutionis rice flour
- ・70g Kinu(silky) tofu
- ・3 tbsp Cocoa powder
1: Freeze the bananas. Cut the bananas into small pieces and put them in a container, then rest it in a freezer overnight. 2: Next day, boil the pumpkin. Make puree from the boiled pumpkin in a bowl. Make sure you get rid of all the seeds! 3: Make the pumpkin tray! Cut the pumpkin’s head and start digging the inside using a spoon. I’m not used to caving pumpkins so it took me an hour! 4: Start prepping for the smoothie. In a bowl whisk together the milk, oats, and chia seeds. Place in fridge for 1 hour. While waiting, we are going to make the Shiratama! 5: Mix the Shiratama ingredients. Mix the ingredients and knead with your hand until the dough becomes smooth. If the mixture is too dry, add a little tofu till the dough is just right. (When it’s too dry, it’s difficult to stick ears and limbs together, and we don’t want that!)6: Separate the dough into 2 colors. Take 1/4 of the dough and knead again with cocoa powder. The color of brown turns darker after boiling, so no need to put too much cocoa powder this time.7: Start Crafting! This is the best part! When attaching eyes to the face, make sure the dough is sticky enough to stick together, otherwise, they might fall apart when boiling. No one likes eyeless sprites!8: Boil them. Drop the sprites gently in a boiling water with a low heat, and cook them till they float. (Be super gentle when you pick up the sprites. I often did it wrong and break them when tossing it into the water… It was sad! So do practice!) It should take around 5 minutes. When they start to float, that means they are ready to be picked up!
9: Pick them up from hot water and drain. When they are floating, that means they are well-cooked. Keep the boiled sprites aside in fresh water while you work on the smoothie next! 10: Mix all the smoothie stuff! Put the soaked oats ingredients in the fridge, pumpkin puree, honey, cinnamon and frozen bananas in a blender, then blend it until all mixture is combined. Should take around 2~3 minutes. 11: Pour the smoothie into pumpkin treys.
12: Add the Soot Sprites on top and you’re done! Super cute Soot Sprites and beautiful pumpkin smoothie remind me of Halloween. 😉 It’s time to enjoy this healthy vegan smoothie with a few black cuties on top! I love the pumpkin treys! They really add the awesomeness of Halloween spirits! Studio Ghibli looks not too bad in Halloween time. They should make new film after this, maybe something like “One Night Before the Christmas” 😀 Oooh.. So cute! When he’s staring at me on a spoon, I just swoon and melt with the cuteness! This is the healthy vegan smoothie with soaked oats with chia seeds inside. I especially love the subtle cinnamon flavor added in this smoothie. I only used a bit of honey because it’s naturally sweet from bananas and pumpkin, but it was sweet enough for me. If you are a sweet tooth like my boyfriend, then add a bit more honey when mixing in a blender! If you are looking for a healthy Halloween dessert recipe, this one could be it!
